‘American Apples and Latino Grit’
Latin American migrants work in orchards and packhouses in Washington state
18th December is International Migrants Day, designated by the United Nations as a time to reflect upon the positive role of migrants in societies around the world and the challenges they face.
This Apple Story is about the contribution of Latino migrants to the apple industry in Washington state in the northwest corner of the United States of America. Written for Apples & People by Wenatchee historian and author Chris Rader, the story explains the long relationship between Latin America and America’s Apple State and celebrates the workers who grow, harvest, and pack apples – and the grit of migrants, some of whom now own their own orchards.
The story includes photographs kindly provided by Wenatchee Valley Museum and Visitor Center, Carlos Lopez, Washington Apple Commission, Stemilt Growers, and Chris Rader, taken at various orchards and packing houses around Washington state.
