‘Antonovka – The People’s Apple’

The hardy Antonovka apple holds a special place in Russian culture and cuisine

For over two years now, the online Apples & People exhibition programme has been telling stories based upon the icons on Helen Cann’s wonderful map of The Apple World.

One such story is about Russia’s Antonovka apple, known as the People’s Apple. It is published on the anniversary of the violent death of Aleksandr Pushkin, perhaps Russia’s greatest poet and also very fond of pickled apples.

This story talks of the fragrance and sweet delight of the Antonovka apple swallowed in melancholy by senseless aggression. All images are reproduced in black and white.
