‘Life with more than one Granny’
Granny Smith and how her apple made an Australian family
This Apples & People story has been written for us by Australian apple lover and author Jon Doust, who recounts how the Granny Smith apple has accompanied him throughout his life in Western Australia. The Granny Smith apple was a chance seedling found by Maria Ann “Granny” Smith at the bottom of her garden near Sydney in 1868. She died shortly afterwards on 9th March 1870.
The story is illustrated with paintings and drawings from collections around Australia, an image by Ukrainian political cartoonist Vladimir Kazanevsky, and photographs supplied by Apple & Pear Australia Ltd, as well as one of Lottie Sweeney’s fantastic new apple models commissioned for Apples & People.
